Conquering The Wrong Body

by MIGUEL MISSÉ

A sweeping book that questions first-hand the gender norms and rejection which trans people are made to feel towards their bodies

Combining personal experience with a sharp critical gaze, renowned activist and sociologist Miguel Missé weaves a sweeping book challenging the dominant medical discourse on gender and transsexuality. “I have this strange feeling that my body has been stolen", he admits, questioning why trans people are systematically required to reject their bodies and modify them. As well as bodies deemed too fat, too thin, too flat or bald, Missé denounces in his book the solution proposed by medicine to transexulity being a visit to the doctor and their operating table.

Using both an intimate and scathing style, he invites us to stop understanding transsexuality as something biological requiring medical solutions, and to start thinking of it as a social identity, with a cultural and political dimension. Missé opens very valuable conversations, and reflects on how medicine builds the masculinity, feminity and how it shapes the trans experience. An invitation for us all to recover our bodies and to live freely our bodily insurrections, whatever they may be.
